Composition Notebooks: Double the fun

Found this AMAZING idea at Christ is the Heart of Christmas

Take your composition notebooks to a home improvement store and have them run them through their big saws... LOOK how amazing these are! And they will fit perfectly in the shoeboxes.

These will decorate up easily if you wanted.. and you will bless kids with these notebooks. School supplies are ALWAYS a blessing to the children who receive the shoeboxes!

Cute, Easy, No Sew Pencil Cases

This pencil pouch can cost under 10 cents depending on your source of duct tape and ziplocks. Try the dollar store for the tape. Thanks to Cathy on FB for the heads up for the idea!

This is made with a gallon ziplock and duct tape. Use tape down the bag and cut to desired depth. Some crafters fold the bottom up a bit to avoid it being sticky inside and tape the bottom. SO cute. This would be a great craft for youth groups! Duct tape crafts are trendy and easy and fun.. and putting together their own pencil case for the boxes would be a great idea for any youth packing party.

Dancing Ribbons

Wow.. it has been a LONG time since I posted.. but it is time to start again. I hope you agree. We have a LOT going on here in Klamath Falls.... and there are tons of great ideas all over the web.. and it is DEFINITELY time to start thinking OCC again!

If you don't know what Operation Christmas Child is, click the tab at the top of the page to learn more....

Now for a lovely craft idea by Linda L. an OCC fan I met on FB. I love this!!

Now that you have seen them, you probably want to make these for your box as well. Right? They are so precious and will be so much fun for the child who receives them. And you could do many variations! Painting the rod, multiple ribbons, etc.

Here are her instructions:

Basically it is a 3/8th inch x 12 inch wooden dowel with an eye screw in one end. Then I attached a rather large jump ring onto that eye screw. Then a key ring. I slid on a jingle bell onto another jump ring and put that on the key ring. Then I just tied the ribbons on the key ring. Cut the ends and added fray check to all ends. Rolled up and voila!! (Pins are not for the box) The ribbon is about 2 1/2 - 3 yards for older kids. About 1 1/2-2 yards for younger kids.

Easter Clearance is HERE

And now is the time!!! Walmart, Fred Meyers, Rite Aid, grocery stores, stores of ALL kinds have their Easter stuff on CLEARANCE!!! Most places will be 50% off today and keep going down and down in prices.

What can you get???

Stuffed animals!!! The stores are full of small stuffed animals, sized for an Easter basket they are perfect for the shoeboxes. Bunnies abound, but you can find all kinds, including MY favorite, lambs! Walmart's should be 1.49 today... and IF they make it to 75% they will be 74 cents but they often sell out before then.

CANDY! Remember, hard candy only... no chocolate. (Leave that to treat yourself.)

Small toys! Of all kinds... sidewalk chalk eggs, balls, etc.

School supplies. Yup, pencils and erasers and notebooks all themed for Easter. Bunnies, yes, but SOMETIMES items with christian themes as well.

Extras- cups, tshirts, etc.

And what about those eggs??? Well, they will probably go deeper in sales but what do we do with them??

There are tons of ideas! I love this one I found on ClipWithPurpose's pinterest page

http://www.craftinterrupted.com/2013/03/fun-jar-friday-38-nesting-eggs.html

All over the web are ideas on how to make maracas or shakers with plastic eggs. Or how about a mini sewing kit. For TONS of ideas check out pinterest and especially this board: http://www.pinterest.com/clipwithpurpose/eggcellent-ways-to-use-plastic-easter-eggs/

Fill Your Shoeboxes with Loads of Love... Crafting Ideas for OCC

I love to include something homemade in my shoeboxes!! And with Valentine's Day around the corner I thought love themed crafts especially appropriate. I pray as I create the items... and I hope that the child receiving can feel the love with which the items are made. That said I am NOT crafty... so simple is important to me. There are SO many options... check the pinterest links in the right sidebar for MORE ideas... but here are a few to get you started!

This idea is one I have been doing a lot lately... take old broken crayons and make them into chunky multi-colored crayons for 2-4 year olds. Don't have broken crayons? Ask a local Sunday School, Kindergarten, or preschool for their cast offs and make a blessing for a child! (Because they can almost look like candy, you might want to include a colored piece of paper to let them know what it is for... and don't forget to put these into ziploc bags. :)

How about friendship necklaces??? These are made with homemade shrink plastic. Super fun to make... and special too. Give both halves... or keep half and send a picture of you wearing it... and send the other half in the shoebox. Then pray for the child whenever you wear it.

Instructions at http://jewelrymakingjournal.com/best-friend-jewelry-shrinkies-tutorial/

How about traditional friendship bracelets?? There are TONS of methods and types... I adore these heart ones!! And it has step by step photo instructions too.

Packing a shoebox with kids? How about this idea, tracing their hands for the pattern?

Heart shaped beaded wands or pencil topper?? Cute!

http://www.notimeforflashcards.com/2014/01/bead-heart-wands-valentines-day-craft.html

Nothing says love like glittery hearts.. right??? Ooooooo so sparkly.

The internet is FULL of ideas... and perhaps you have your own ideas. How fun to include something to show a child how much YOU love them... and how much they are loved by God.

Crafting With Kids For Kids

I love to include handmade items in our shoeboxes..... I feel as though the child who receives it can feel the love and prayers that go with the shoebox. And I love to pack shoeboxes with children so that they can minister to another in a meaningful way.

SO crafting with kids for the shoeboxes is a natural extension... but sometimes it can be challenging to find easy crafts that are worth including in the boxes. So I thought I would pull together a variety of ideas... this will be the first in a series of Kids Crafts.

The possibilities are endless for decorating notebooks.. with children have plenty of cut out shapes and stickers and simple embellishments ready to go... and you might want to start with the notebooks already covered in a paper.

Shrinky dink, with kids artwork, made into a pendant or even cut into two and made into a pair of friendship bracelets.

Egg shakers ... could be made with electrical tape as shown or perhaps strips of duct tape.. and could be filled with beads. Although beautiful clear, this could also be done with any color eggs and could even have 2 different colors of top and bottom mixed. And these could be decorated with stickers for extra fun.

Keep watching for MORE craft ideas for kids.

Fun Floral Pencil Craft.. Kids crafting for kids

This is another one of those fun crafts you or your children can create for your shoeboxes. I LOVE crafts where kids or teens can help make items that will bring joy.

I found this idea on A Thrifty Mom blog and the link to the project will be below.

Aren't these FUN?!?!?! Why yes. Yes they are!

This is a super simple craft, cute, fast, and fun. All the supplies are generally available at a Dollar store... but if not, surely at your local craft store or Walmart.

For full instructions of this simple craft go to http://athriftymom.com/diy-flower-pencil-money-saving-craft-for-kids/

Making Craft Kits for the Shoeboxes

I recently read a post from the Steward Shop about using a Michael's 50% off coupon (which come up often!!) for buying beads for necklace kits, and it brought back to mind the idea of making kits for the shoeboxes.

That post from the Steward Shop referenced an earlier post that has the specifics how to create a jewelry kit and the cost break down. http://stewardshop.blogspot.com/2012/05/colorful-bead-craft-kits-for-kids.html (You can also buy crosses at the same referenced store as the animal beads at http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=22204&es=238080000ESC&utm_source=CSE&utm_medium

The Steward Shop post is about buying in bulk and making LOTS of kits for very little money. This is FABULOUS if you do a packing party at your church or in your area, but may be less practical for an individual.

I loved the idea so much I started thinking about other types of craft kits that you could include. (For regular readers this idea is not new.. but here it is again... hopefully with some new info as well.)

If you have leftover craft supplies this is a great starting point.

How about making a jewelry kit with leftover beads? If you are a jewelry maker as a craft this is an easy idea. You could include beads in a baggie, or a small container such as from plastic baby food containers along with an appropriate cording whether for young children or perhaps an elastic thin cord for older children and smaller beads. Walmart and various craft stores have inexpensive charms you could add if you wanted as well... I particularly like the inexpensive shell cross charms from the kids crafting section of Walmart.

Or maybe, you are a paper crafter? If you scrapbook or make cards you have TONS of great supplies. Maybe you simply want to make a mixed craft kit with glue stick and scissors and a mix of papers. (You could buy extras such as googly eyes or fun stickers if you wanted... but just the pretty papers would be great.)

You could make a card making kit with some folded blank cards and fun supplies.

Or maybe you also have a cricut machine? This could open up even more possibilities. There are dies that let you make paper dolls. Wouldn't a paper doll set be LOVELY for a girl? You could do this with the tabs setting for a traditional paper doll project, or use other methods of affixing such as magnet dots or velcro and laminate the body itself. Or you could just use fun shapes from the cricut for a paper craft set or card making set.

How about a sewing kit? Do you quilt? Or sew? You could include squares of extra fabric and basic sewing supplies. Or maybe large pieces of fabric? (Maybe a pattern too if very simple, but that might be more language dependent.) I have heard of people who line their boxes with fabric, especially the plastic ones.

Or a lacing kit? Perhaps make your own lacing cards by printing pictures from online or making simple shapes from regular colored paper and laminating them, punching holes, and including yard or cording for the sewing. (If using yarn, consider wrapping the end in tape.)

What about including fabric extras and sewing kit and a baby doll... and the child can make some doll clothes for their baby?

Crazy craft kit? How about making a fun kit for the child to play around with including pom poms and googly eyes and yarn and chenille stems and feathers? Or maybe you want to make a puppet kit? You could start a base puppet out of felt or a sock, and then include the fun extras for them to decorate it? Maybe include a photo of one? Or include felt starter finger puppets, with one finished and the supplies to make a bunch of silly extra ones.

For boys, the challenge is more difficult although many boys would enjoy an art kit... how about a fishing kit from extras from your fishing supplies? Be aware that everything must be stored SAFELY and that this kit would be appropriate for older boys only. Perhaps taping the hooks onto a card or onto the lid of the container used for the kit.   Or a kit to make a leather pouch?

The ideas are many... and I am sure this is just the beginning!! Whether you buy in bulk to make bulk kits or use what you have, I know the child who receives them will be blessed!

Shrinky Dink Jewelry

Isn't this fun??? I think this would be a GREAT idea for a children's group or teen group to do for their shoeboxes! To make this or a variation thereof and take a picture of themselves wearing one half and sending the other. The possibilities are endless.

Crafting with Love

ClipwithPurpose blog is an amazing OCC blog.. and it just shared an idea that I know many of you will appreciate. If you craft for your shoeboxes... and I know many of you do... how about adding a note or tag so that the child who receives it knows that they are special and loved.

As I craft I pray for the child. So that they feel my love and God's love when they use it. How about adding a tag just to that effect? Isn't that a great idea?

Operation Christmas Child Craft Idea- Simple Backpack

I have shared a variation of a backpack before, but the instructions on this are VERY clear and the result is so cute that I couldn't resist. And a backpack is a real blessing for most children. This will allow them to carry the items in their shoebox or school supplies.
Cute, right????

Quick Sew Hair Bow

This is a simple idea using 2 scrap pieces of fabric, and if you have a sewing machine is a quick project that is so perfect for the shoeboxes. There is even a ready to print pattern.

Too cute!

Making Notebooks - Simple Matchbook Notebook Tutorials

There are many variations of the matchbook notebook online.... all are simple.. and the possibilities are endless. If you have free paper (or almost free paper) from Staples rebates, or lots of scrap paper around this could be a great way to add a notebook or 2 to your shoeboxes!

I first saw this version with a paint sample notebook... really too small to be useful for schoolwork, but so cute and easy.

I loved the idea so I went searching. And found this simple tutorial with template. It makes a notebook with 3 1/2" square pages.

And I loved this idea so much1 It is simple to do, could make it as simple or fancy as you like, and would be a great way to use that free paper for the shoeboxes.

Then I thought, 3 1/2 inches square is still small. What about if it were made with 12 inch cardstock? The dimensions could be scaled up to a 5 1/4 inch square paper. That is a nice size notebook. The method is simple enough I think it would be an easy matter to make one in any size you had cardboard for.

Want to make it with free cover? How about using cereal boxes or other upcycled materials for the cardboard? It is colorful and free. And could be matched with a pencil holder too?

Making Jewelry with Washers

I love love love some of these projects below. I can't wait to have a crafting party with these as some of the projects. I believe this would be especially fun with teen girls, and to add to the shoeboxes of 10-14 year old girls.

The simplest one I found was this one
I love how easy it is... but it can be added to in many ways. I love the idea of using Bible verses and I love the touch of glitter. Learn how at http://peapodcreations.blogspot.com/2011/04/washer-necklace-simple-tutorial.html

Isn't this cute? And you could do many variations, changing the cord up for ribbon or leather. You could put on small rhinestones or glitter or charms. Or do more than one washer with a smaller one layered on top. So simple and so cute. Learn how at http://www.creationsbykara.com/2011/07/washer-necklace-tutorial.html

This one is more complicated, requiring more supplies.. but the effect is so beautiful I could not resist including it.  This uses special alcohol inks, and it would be beautiful with or without the wire wrapping and beads. The wire and beads could be added to any of the above options too.... see all the possibilities?? Learn how to make this beautiful pendant at http://lifemadecreations.blogspot.com/2009/09/washer-pendant-how-to.html

How about just using nail polish to decorate the washer? Charms could be added, or extras as above.. but this is fun. And with all the sparkly and fabulous nail polishes available in EVERY color, the options are limitless in this easy variation of the washer jewelry.
Learn how to do this at http://www.u-createcrafts.com/2010/06/creative-guest-nail-polish-washers-by.html#

There are so many other variations out there... I have included just a bit more below.

Metal stamps are another addition that could be neat. Don't you love this ribbon on this one??
